          Published:2020-11-10

Dr. Zulfikar Ahamad Siddiqui, the only island doctor at Bodufushi island of Maldives (Emergency Clinic, Alibey Raa Atol), an MBBS graduate from 2012 batch of Dali University, sent an email to Education and Service Center for International Students (ESCIS), Dali University, telling his journey after graduation.

Bodufushi is a small island of Raa Atol, located in the north of the Republic of Maldives, with a population around 600, in the Indian Ocean.

After passing the Nepal Medical Council’s (NMC) license exam, Zulfikar worked at Bir Hospital and Dhulikhel Hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal. Due to his working experience and multi-language capability, he had a chance to work as a doctor for Alibey Company on an island called Bodufushi, Maldives. Faced with a road unknown, Zulfikar didn’t think too much but chose to work as a doctor there, an only one doctor on the island.

Just like the rest of the world, corona virus has affected the island. The island is under lockdown for 2 months, thus making it more difficult to buy medicines and other necessary materials. Zulfikar has to manage all the cases even if they need lab investigations or other interventions. Through efficient quarantine and checking solutions, no one was found as a case finally. Kept A Community of Shared Future for the Mankind in mind, Zulkifar, along with other graduates of Dali University, are fighting the virus around the world.

In his letter, Zulfikar said that a doctor's life is difficult but it has certain prestige that comes with it. He chooses to keep up his responsibilities for the prestige as long as for the safe and sound of the island.

In India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, besides Zulfikar, there are many medical graduates of Dali University, working in cities and communities hospitals. As Zulfikar said, “My hope is to serve my patients with all the knowledge and skills I have. I want to contribute to the field of medicine for the benefit of all people and keep learning new skills.” This also might be the utmost and sincere hope of all the medical students.

Our warmest respects and sincere greetings to Dali University’s medical graduates, no matter where you are, in New Delhi, Kolkata, Kathmandu, Dhaka, Lahore, or in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Yangon, Vientiane, Phnom Penh, Sihanouk, like Zulfikar rooted in a small island in South Asia or Southeast Asia, Dali University is proud of you.
